What is softshell?
Most softshell garments are made of a stretchy material, which makes them very comfortable to use. They lend themselves to sitting a little more tightly on the body.
A softshell jacket is made of a soft and stretchy material that is windproof and water repellent. We’re not talking about waterproof garments that require taped seams and a membrane, but a surface that keeps out wetness and which also has excellent breathability. Softshell material, as a rule, dries quickly. By comparison, there are shell jackets, often called hardshell jackets, which are designed to offer durable weather protection.
Can I use softshell garments as a middle layer?
Softshell garments can advantageously be used for activities involving greater movement and are also well suited as middle layers because they have good insulation properties.
